Food competition in Hong Kong is fierce, but that rarely refers to price competition. Some few years ago, mediocre dinners started to cost HK$300 per head and now that’s the norm. This is where the afternoon tea at Feast became a pleasant shocker. While most afternoon tea sets at hotels (and non-hotels) can cost over HK$500 (for two), the Feast & Franc Franc one is only HK$238 (for two).
More importantly, they’ve collaborated with Franc Franc to design cute and the most Instagrammable food items (with lots of stripes and polka dots) that’s placed on Franc Franc’s NEWMO collection tableware. This special edition set will only be available from 15 June to 10 July 2015 on Mondays to Fridays, 3:00-5:30pm. Start planning now!
Big savoury bites were best
The savoury selection was easily my favourite part of the set, with the salmon and cucumber rye toast being the ultimate star. They’re super generous with the fatty smoked salmon and it tasted great atop a very crunchy (though maybe a tad dry) rye toast. The rest of the savoury items were good in general too. By the way, don’t underestimate that small underwhelming-looking egg salad profiterole (puff) there – it was really good too!
Petite but still tasty scones
Perhaps the biggest (but not that big) compromise for dollars here was the size of the scones. They were about half the size of usual ones. Because of that, they’re also much crunchier than traditional scones. Nevertheless, they surprisingly still had the right taste to it, though definitely not the best I’ve had. This was served alongside what must have been the prettiest stripy pot of clotted cream and jam, purposely designed to go with the Franc Franc tableware this tea set features!
Keeping it simple with the desserts
Looking at the menu, the desserts sound straight forward. They feature lemon cupcakes, strawberry pavlova, raspberry slice and red berry fool. But here’s where keeping it simple worked for me; although no new innovative creation was uncovered to my taste buds that day, the desserts were in general just delicious and enjoyable. The Red Berry Fool tasted like a very light cream mixed with raspberry sauce – super straight forward but ended up to be my favourite!
Enjoyable and beautiful afternoon
The Feast x Franc Franc afternoon tea promises an enjoyable and relaxing afternoon. I love Feast (the restaurant) for having a lot of natural lighting which helps my photos (a lot!) and lifts up the general ambience. There were not a lot of wow items on the rack, but the quality was pretty good overall and super excellent for the price you pay.
