YUEN LONG, HONG KONG – A malfunctioning underground utility line plunged more than 120 households in the Yuen Long district into darkness Sunday evening, according to facility operator CLP Power Hong Kong Limited.
The disruption began at approximately 6:53 PM on Sunday, November 23rd, when a low-voltage underground cable near Wang Chau failed, affecting power supply to about 127 residential customers in the Tung Tau Wai San Tsuen area. CLP quickly dispatched engineers to the site to address the significant localized outage in the northwestern New Territories, a familiar challenge in Hong Kong’s densely populated or older areas where infrastructure maintenance is critical.
Swift Restoration Efforts Underway
Faced with the extensive power loss, CLP technical teams immediately initiated emergency repairs, including laying temporary power lines to bypass the faulty segment. The utility company prioritized restoring service efficiently to minimize the hardship for residents.
A spokesperson for CLP confirmed the timeline of the restoration efforts. The initial phase, which involved installing temporary cabling, allowed technicians to restore electricity to about one-third of the affected customer base by approximately 10:30 PM.
“Our teams worked around the clock to ensure the community could return to normal swiftly,” the spokesperson stated, without elaborating on the cause of the initial cable failure.
Engineers continued remediation work late into the night. Full restoration of power to all 127 affected customers was completed just after midnight, specifically at 12:38 AM the following morning. The entire process, from the fault detection to full recovery, took slightly less than six hours.
