Acclaimed purveyor of authentic Neapolitan pizza, Little Napoli, has officially inaugurated its highly anticipated new location in Wanchai, relaunching operations on December 10, following a brief closure of its popular Happy Valley site. The reopening confirms its enduring commitment to traditional Italian cuisine while introducing a larger, meticulously designed dining environment and an array of new Mediterranean-inspired dishes to Hong Kong Island’s vibrant culinary scene.
Since its launch in 2021, Little Napoli quickly became a favoured spot in Happy Valley, establishing a loyal following thanks to the expertise of owner and chef Gavino Pilo, a native of Naples. Following a closure on October 4th, the team utilized the relocation period to significantly enhance the customer experience, successfully translating their renowned quality to a more spacious establishment in Wanchai. The new venue not only features an expanded interior seating area but also boasts custom-ordered, heritage-style floor tiles sourced from Italy, carefully cultivating an immersive atmosphere reminiscent of a charming Southern Italian pizzeria.
Upholding Neapolitan Authenticity
At the heart of Little Napoli’s success is its dedication to traditional Neapolitan pizza-making. Chef Pilo rigorously adheres to authentic methods, including utilizing high-quality ingredients imported directly from his hometown. Key to the distinct texture of the pizzas is the high-temperature cooking process, where the dough is baked in an imported Neapolitan stone oven reaching approximately 400 degrees Celsius. This intense heat ensures the signature contrast of a crispy exterior crust and a soft, chewy interior, allowing the richly varied toppings to shine.
The expanded Wanchai menu introduces several exciting elements alongside their classic offerings. Patrons can now explore a selection of new Mediterranean pizzas showcasing fresh, seasonal flavours.
Introducing New Portable Pizza Formats
Responding to demand for versatile, on-the-go dining options, Little Napoli is pioneering the Pizza Portafoglio (Wallet Pizza) series. Inspired by the traditional Neapolitan street food practice of folding pizza for easy consumption, this unique format offers convenience without compromising authenticity.
The classic Margherita is presented in this signature folded style. Additionally, the Pizza Wallet series features innovative new varieties, including:
- Contadina: A rich blend of countryside ingredients.
- Zingara: Known for its generous inclusion of Parma ham, catering to meat enthusiasts.
Furthermore, the new menu enhances the selection of Pizza Fritta (fried Italian calzones). One noteworthy addition is the crisp, non-greasy Dondiego, which, despite being deep-fried, maintains a remarkably light texture, offering a savory alternative for snacking or sharing.
Beyond pizza, the Wanchai location has broadened its offerings with an expanded selection of Neapolitan small plates (tapas). One dish that has already garnered attention is the Melanzane in Carrozza. This unexpected take on fried eggplant surprises diners with its multilayered texture and satisfyingly rich, savory interior that has been likened to a light, delicate fish.
The Traditional Way to Enjoy Pizza Napoletana
For those new to genuine Neapolitan pizza, the restaurant’s staff and materials provide guidance on the correct way to eat it. Historically, Pizza Napoletana was conceived as street food. Given the extremely soft dough and thin centre, picking up an entire slice conventionally often results in toppings sliding off.
The correct method, which the restaurant highlights on its takeout packaging, is to cut the pizza into four sections and then fold each piece lengthwise. This technique prevents the loss of sauce and cheese while concentrating the flavour and allowing customers to fully appreciate the distinctive, airy crust.
Little Napoli’s transition to Wanchai marks a significant expansion for the highly-regarded pizzeria, promising both its quality-focused regulars and newcomers a taste of authentic Italian tradition wrapped in a classic Southern European ambiance. The new location aims to solidify its position as a destination point for premium Italian cuisine on Hong Kong Island.
