Authentic Neapolitan Pizzeria Relaunches in Wan Chai with Expanded Menu

Little Napoli, the acclaimed Neapolitan pizza specialist, has officially relaunched its operations in a new, expanded venue in Wan Chai, following a temporary closure of its original Happy Valley location. The highly anticipated reopening on December 10, 2023, marks a significant expansion for the restaurant known for its authentic, Michelin-recognized handmade pizzas, now offering an enhanced dining environment and several exciting new menu items inspired by Mediterranean flavors and classic street food.

The move from Happy Valley, where Little Napoli quickly established a dedicated following since its 2021 inception, addresses the demand for more dining space and access on Hong Kong Island. Chef and owner Gavino Pilo, a native of Naples, Italy, continues his focus on crafting traditional Neapolitan pizza, utilizing high-quality ingredients imported directly from his hometown. The pizzas are famously baked in a 400°C imported stone oven, ensuring the signature combination of soft, chewy crusts and expertly charred edges.

Elevated Dining Experience and New Culinary Offerings

The new Wan Chai location features design elements carefully chosen to transport diners to the heart of Southern Italy. Notably, the interior incorporates custom-ordered, vintage-style floor tiles from Italy, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a charming Neapolitan trattoria. This stylistic overhaul is coupled with a substantial increase in seating capacity, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Crucially, the relaunch introduces several innovative additions to the menu, blending traditional Neapolitan techniques with new concepts that cater to the evolving tastes of Hong Kong’s food scene:

  • Pizza Portafoglio (Wallet Pizza) Series: Designed for convenient takeaway, this series features pizzas folded like a wallet, perfect for enjoying on the go—a nod to the authentic street food customs of Naples. While the classic Margherita is featured in the folded format, two imaginative new flavors have launched: Contadina and Zingara. The Zingara, in particular, is generating buzz for its generous portions of Parma ham.
  • Expanded Small Bites (Naples Snacks): The menu now features a wider array of Napoli Stuzzichini (small bites), including unique items like the newly added Pizza Fritta, a fried calzone-like pastry that, despite being deep-fried, reportedly maintains a surprisingly light and non-greasy texture. A new savory snack, the Dondiego, a savory long-form fried pastry, has also been introduced. The Melanzane in Carrozza (fried eggplant) has also garnered attention for its delicate, layered texture, which many initial tasters compare unexpectedly to fish.

The Art of Eating Authentic Neapolitan Pizza

The restaurant is also committed to educating patrons on the traditional Neapolitan method of consuming their famously thin-crusted pizzas. Because the center of an authentic Neapolitan pizza is often just millimeters thick, picking up a whole slice can cause toppings to slide off.

To enjoy the full flavor without the mess, Little Napoli encourages diners to adopt the authentic technique: cut the pizza into four slices and fold each slice lengthwise, or ‘a libretto’ (like a book), before eating. This historical street-food method contains the fillings and ensures a perfect bite. The restaurant thoughtfully includes instructions in its takeout boxes, encouraging an authentic and mess-free experience.

Little Napoli’s repositioning in Wan Chai, complete with an enhanced physical space and a refreshed menu, solidifies its status as a destination for authentic Italian gastronomy in Hong Kong. Guests are encouraged to visit the new venue on Hong Kong Island to explore the full range of classic and new Neapolitan specialties.
