Fine Dining Redefined in Hong Kong

When L’Estrange London first approached me for my recommendations on fine dining restaurants in Hong Kong, I blanked. Amber? Caprice? What other fine dining restaurants do I know? I couldn’t possibly bring myself to recommend places I didn’t even personally love, but I honestly have barely visited “fine dining” restaurants in the past 2-3 years. Thankfully, the important detail emerged as they were looking for excellent quality restaurants I feel comfortable in. Shifting dining trends in Hong Kong These thoughts of mine are anecdotal of the major shift in dining trends in Hong Kong, and around the world, towards more laid back spots which are still able to deliver top quality food. This was also exactly why I loved Tapisco so much, during my recent visit to Lisbon. The thing is, I used to fantasise about being taken to Michelin-starred fine dining restaurants at hotels for my birthday. But to suggest this today would have even my closest friends cringe at the thought of having to act so uncomfortably formal. Check out the full article …

Little Creatures: Spacious Hideaway for Craft Beers in Kennedy Town

In Hong Kong, we’re blessed with a lot of things: crazy skyscrapers, beautiful natural landscape, diversity of cuisines and abundance of activities. But I think we could all easily agree on one thing we lack: space. So while there’s no shortage of cute bars for craft beer, Little Creatures really stood out for its large comfortable space. They had high ceilings and plushy sofa seats – for once, two people wouldn’t be told off for wanting to occupy a 4-6 person table. But I was also surprised to learn the lengthy history behind Little Creatures. They’ve been in the craft beer market for many years, originating from Australia, and only recently introduced their passion to Kennedy Town. Some of their signature beers are brewed in-house, while some are imported. Beer Tasting Paddle: 6 x 100ml *must order* As soon as the waiter mentioned a “beer paddle” with six types of beers to try, I wasn’t even interested in seeing the menu anymore. You start with a light one and progress rightwards through the paddle. I genuinely enjoyed all six of the …

3 New Restaurants in Hong Kong You Need to Try

Most new restaurants can’t claim the heart of the average demanding Hong Kong customer. We love new things, but it’s also gotta be a little unique, something we can’t get elsewhere and of course so deliciously interesting that it makes us go “wow” or “ooo” or “mmm mMM”. Nothing less is adequate. So I was pleasantly surprised to recently come across as many as three new restaurants – Belon, Okra and Vanimal – which I loved and can recommend to you all with conviction. They’re not exactly 10/10s but follow the must order dishes below, and you won’t go wrong. 1. Belon It’s no surprise that Black Sheep Restaurants is behind one of the hottest new restaurants to open up lately. They’ve done a number of successful ventures before that I personally love, with Le Garcon Saigon and Carbone being among my favourites. Belon is a nice little French bistro with a modern fused cuisine, but you’d need to take a closer look at the food on offer for a better idea of what I mean. The …

What to Eat in Kennedy Town?

Kennedy Town is not an area I logically visit often since I live on the other side of Hong Kong, beyond even the “dark side”. But this place is now blessed with a conveniently close by MTR station and a proliferation of new restaurants. Way ahead of me, were the guys at iPick who organised a genius Kennedy Town Food Tour with Foodie magazine. We sampled dishes across various restaurants in the area, and overnight spawned just as many reasons to visit Kennedy Town! So where should you eat? Laid back Comfort: Fish & Chick Fish & Chick is perfect if you’re in a group of 3-4 people and are looking for something casual. Their food is honest and delicious, while portions are quite generous too. We tried their crab croquettes salad, which had a thin crusty edge and very crabby interior. The roasted chicken and fish and chips were both super juicy – impossible to choose a favourite as they were all cooked extremely well! Where: 25 New Praya, Kennedy Town Phone: 2974 0088 …

Waffling Beans: Amazing Coffee and Everything Waffles

I do love my all-American greasy big brunches at The Diner, but one weekend I felt like something different and headed over to Hong Kong island for a waffle-ful brunch at Waffling Beans. The photos of their seemingly perfect coffees (later verified to be accurate portrayals) on Openrice was an additional, potentially stronger, motivation that successfully dragged me on a one hour commute all the way to Kennedy Town on a weekend. Savoury waffles that go with everything Brunch Almost all items on their menu feature waffles (hence the name) – we ordered the Waffles Benedict and All The Best (*must order*) off their weekend brunch offering. Everything on each dish seamlessly matched the waffles, evidence that much effort must have been put into creating a savoury version. I probably preferred the All The Best combo more, just because it was a relatively less common dish found at brunch spots and all the ingredients tasted good. There has definitely been growing Western waffle spots in Hong Kong, but Waffling Beans is one of the few (if not only) that serve Liege waffles which …

French food at Bistro du Vin Kennedy Town

I love French food for the food, but not so much the fact that it’s so often served as fine dining. Apart from the insufficient portions and extortionate prices, the uncomfortable formality is among the biggest reasons I avoid such places. For that reason, La Grande Bouffe and La Port Parfume are excellent lunch spots. But Bistro du Vin is still the casual French restaurant that impresses me most and countless people have revealed the same to me. In fact, I visited on a Monday night and they were fully booked! Scallops carpaccio The dish was simple and refreshing. Honestly it wasn’t served with much more than the super fresh scallops themselves, so it was really the quality of the seafood that we were amazed by. That means, no fishy taste whatsoever. Escargots with bone marrow *must order* I’ve probably had bone marrow five times in my life and I almost swore I would not make a mistake for the sixth time. But I still wanted to try it this time and it was amazing. …
