Consumer Council Uncovers Safety and Performance Flaws in Cooking Blenders

Hong Kong’s Consumer Council (CC) has released a comprehensive report revealing significant discrepancies in the safety and functional performance of 12 popular cooking blenders, including multifunction devices often marketed as “health machines” or high-speed wall breakers. The findings show that while these appliances are popular among health-conscious consumers and home cooks, nearly half failed crucial safety assessments, and blending efficacy varied widely across tested samples, necessitating caution among buyers seeking high-calibre kitchen aids.

The CC conducted rigorous testing on 12 models currently available in the market, evaluating them on key criteria: blending capability, cooking results, and electrical safety standards (specifically insulating properties and temperature control). The results indicate a concerning level of inconsistency, with some models excelling in function but failing safety checks, and vice versa.

Safety Concerns Warrant Immediate Attention

A major finding of the review centered on safety compliance, measured against the international safety standards IEC 60335 series. Disturbingly, five of the tested cooking blenders failed the mandatory temperature rise and/or insulation tests. Specifically, two models, the Turbo Italy TSM-392 and Cuisintec KC-8968A, exhibited overheating issues, triggering their protective devices during operation, suggesting potential long-term reliability and safety risks.

Further highlighting safety deficiencies, five models showed insufficient clearance in their insulation distances, heightening the risk of electrical faults such as short circuits, arcing, leakage, and overheating. The affected brands included: Goldenwell, Primada, Proluxury, Cuisintec, and Turbo Italy.

Consumers should also note the scalding risk associated with several models. Three samples—Tefal BL967, Goldenwell GW-HBO800, and Cuisintec KC-8968A—recorded lid temperatures exceeding a hazardous 85°C during the cooking cycle, posing a substantial risk of burns.

Blending and Cooking Performance Varied

The performance assessment focused on the machines’ ability to process ingredients effectively and produce high-quality cooked items like Western-style soups, smoothies, and pastes.

In raw ingredient blending, two samples—the Bruno AK802 and Proluxury PSM00203—showed subpar performance, failing to completely process dense test ingredients like carrots and potatoes. Conversely, models from Philips, Bosch, German Pool, Imarflex, and Primada achieved top marks for producing fine, uniform blends.

When cooking, the results were less clear-cut. For example, when making sesame paste, specific models (Imarflex IBN-725S, Proluxury PSM00203, and Turbo Italy TSM-392) yielded a notably coarse texture. Yet, the Tefal BL967, German Pool PRO-16, and Primada PS810 successfully delivered a smooth, refined paste.

Soup preparation also proved challenging for some, with four models producing soups lacking adequate consistency or uniformity, including premium brands like Bosch and German Pool.

An important expert warning was issued regarding friction blenders (like those from Bosch and German Pool): the CC advises against using these to prepare raw soya beans directly, as the heat generated solely by friction is insufficient to eliminate the raw, grassy flavour and ensure full cooking. Pre-boiling the soybeans is recommended before blending.

Highest Performers and Consumer Takeaways

Despite the widespread inconsistencies, the CC identified high-achieving models. Three appliances—Philips HR2088, Goodway GJ-50181, and Tefal BL967—received the highest overall rating of 4.5 stars out of 5, demonstrating the best balance between safety and performance.

The comprehensive findings underscore the necessity for consumers to prioritise safety compliance alongside functional specifications when purchasing high-powered kitchen appliances. While lower-priced models, particularly small blenders, performed adequately in some functions, the overall trend suggested lower-cost units often presented higher safety risks. The Consumer Council strongly advises checking the full report before investing in these multifunction culinary devices.
