A More Dangerous Cousin to Fatty Liver
While fatty liver affects roughly one in four adults worldwide, fatty pancreas may carry graver implications. Dr. Qian emphasizes that fatty pancreas is not merely a passive marker—it actively promotes carcinogenesis. A 2021 meta-analysis published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology found that fatty pancreas increased pancreatic cancer risk by 2.8 to 6 times across multiple studies, with the highest risk seen in Asian populations.
What Can Be Done?
The good news: fatty pancreas is reversible. Dr. Qian urges those in high-risk categories to adopt immediate lifestyle interventions. Weight loss, a Mediterranean-style diet low in processed foods and sugars, regular aerobic exercise, and limiting alcohol intake can significantly reduce pancreatic fat.
