The Public Mental Health Lab at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is currently recruiting volunteers for a significant new clinical study. The research aims to measure how effective a culturally adapted Mediterranean diet is in alleviating depressive moods and low motivation among Hong Kong residents.
The Gut-Brain Connection
The foundation of this study is the increasingly robust science of the gut-brain axis, an intricate biochemical signaling pathway between the digestive tract and the central nervous system. An imbalance in gut bacteria, often driven by a diet heavy in processed foods and low in fibre, has been strongly linked to systemic inflammation and mood disorders like depression.
By adopting the principles of the Mediterranean diet—rich in omega-3s, antioxidants, and fibre—the study aims to foster a healthier microbiome, potentially leading to an uplift in mood and overall vitality. The twist is that this version is completely localised, incorporating ingredients easily found in wet markets and supermarkets across Hong Kong.
What Participants Get
Beyond advancing science, there are significant personal benefits for those who join. Selected participants will receive professional guidance from a registered dietitian, a customised weekly meal plan, and instructional video content designed for fast, easy home cooking. The study removes the hassle of shopping by delivering fresh food packs and groceries directly to your home.
The incentives are substantial:
- Total reward value: The nutritional support, food deliveries, and a comprehensive gut microbiome analysis report hold an estimated combined value of up to HK$6,900.
- Cash incentive: A completion honorarium of up to HK$100 is also offered to those who finish the 4-week trial.
Who Is Eligible?
The researchers are looking for specific candidates to ensure the validity of the data. You might be a perfect fit if you:
- Are a Hong Kong resident aged 18 to 65.
- Currently feel low in mood or lack energy and motivation.
- Have a diet typically low in vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats.
- Have not received psychotherapy in the last six months.
- Own a smartphone and are willing to adjust your diet for the study period.
How to Apply
Applying is straightforward. Interested individuals simply need to fill out a 5-minute online screening questionnaire. The research team will then contact eligible participants with full details.

The Bigger Picture
If successful, the implications for public health in Hong Kong are widespread. The study could validate a simple, delicious, and highly scalable intervention for mental well-being accessible through daily food choices. For participants, it is a unique opportunity to become active agents in their own mental health journey, guided by experts and supported by science, while receiving tangible rewards that offset the cost of healthy eating in the city.
