From Hong Kong to Hokkaido: New Distillery Wins Four Golds, Master Distiller to Visit

In a stunning debut, Danqiu Distillery—founded by the team behind Hong Kong’s White Lantao gin—has clinched four gold medals at The Global Spirits Masters in its first year of production. Master Distiller David Hsieh will make his first Hong Kong visit from October 29 to November 1, offering enthusiasts a taste of the award-winning new make spirits and the chance to participate in the exclusive 2027 Private Cask program.

Record-Breaking First Year in Hokkaido

Situated at the foot of Daisetsuzan National Park in Higashikawa, Hokkaido, Danqiu Distillery began operations in 2025 under a public-private partnership designed to foster local craft industry. The facility employs a mash filter to process finer malt for higher extraction rates, along with a 168-hour two-stage fermentation that amplifies fruit aromas through yeast and lactic acid activity. Dutch iStill stills complete the setup, while Mount Asahi’s spring water—listed among Japan’s top 100 waters—provides the mineral foundation.

The distillery’s performance at The Global Spirits Masters, organized by The Spirits Business, was exceptional. All four entries earned gold: two New Pot spirits at The World Whisky Masters 2026, and the Snow Window Dry Gin and Navy Strength Gin at The Gin Masters 2026. This achievement places Danqiu among an elite group of new distilleries, with its first single malt whisky anticipated in 2029.

Master Distiller’s Hong Kong Schedule

David Hsieh, who holds a Master’s in Distillation from Heriot-Watt University and has experience in Scottish distilleries, will lead four events during his visit:

  • October 29, 6-8 PM: The Central Whisky (Whisky Masterclass)
  • October 30, 6-8 PM: Hong Kong Golf & Tennis Academy (Members’ Tasting)
  • October 31, 4:30-6:30 PM: 001 (Whisky Masterclass)
  • November 1, 9:15-10 PM: Hong Kong Wine & Gourmet Festival (Central Harbourfront)

At these sessions, Hsieh will discuss the new make spirits and their maturation, providing a behind-the-scenes perspective on the distillery’s evolution.

The 2027 Private Cask Program

During the Hong Kong visit, Danqiu Distillery will launch the 2027 Private Cask program. After sampling the new make, participants can select a cask:

  • 5-Gallon Cask (19 liters): HK$24,800, yielding approximately 24 bottles after three years.
  • American Standard Barrel (200 liters): HK$138,800.
  • Mizunara Hogshead (220 liters): HK$342,800 (UK malt) or HK$359,800 (Japanese barley).

Each cask is managed by the distillery team, ensuring optimal aging conditions until bottling.

Broader Significance

This success underscores the growing global recognition of Japanese craft spirits and the innovative collaboration between Hong Kong and Hokkaido. For whisky and gin enthusiasts, the events and cask program offer a rare direct engagement with a rising producer. As Danqiu Distillery prepares for its 2029 whisky release, this gold-medal debut sets a promising tone for its future in the international spirits landscape.
