The classic “three-color” medley of sweet corn, green peas, and carrots is a staple in many homes across Hong Kong. It usually divides families. Some dig in for the sugary pop of the corn, while others reluctantly scoop up the peas. Now, the Hong Kong Consumer Council has provided the data to settle the debate once and for all. In a rigorous new analysis of 24 frozen sweet corn and green pea samples—purchased from local supermarkets and department stores in late 2022—the watchdog awarded a clear nutritional victory to the humble green pea.
Where Peas Pull Ahead
The nutritional gap between the two vegetables is significant. Green pea samples boasted an average of 4.76g to 8.42g of dietary fiber per 100g, far exceeding the corn’s range of 2.13g to 4.81g. Nine different pea products even qualified for a “high dietary fiber” label.
The difference in Vitamin C was even more pronounced. Most sweet corn samples contained very little, ranging from undetectable levels to just 6.5mg per 100g. The pea samples, however, soared from 7.9mg to 21mg per 100g. A full 10 pea products qualified as a designated source of Vitamin C.
Beta-carotene, which the body converts into Vitamin A, was another category where peas dominated. Sweet corn contained between 23.5 and 50.5 micrograms per 100g. The green peas held a staggering 233 to 362 micrograms per 100g.
Safety Meets Affordability
On safety, the results offered widespread reassurance. No mycotoxins, mercury, or antimony were found in any product. While trace amounts of lead, cadmium, and chromium were detected in some samples, the Council confirmed that every single result fell well within the safe limits stipulated by Hong Kong regulations. The highest chromium levels, for instance, were found in specific imports like EarthBound Farm’s Organic Sweet Corn and Woolworths Australian Peas, but were not deemed a health risk.
The Runners and Riders: 5-Star Picks
The Council awarded its highest 5-star rating exclusively to green pea products. The list provides excellent options across different budgets:
- Birds Eye Petits Pois (HKD 6.7/100g)
- GROWERS PRIDE Garden Peas (HKD 5.1/100g)

Several green pea products also earned 4.5 stars for their brilliant balance of nutrition and value, including Almaverde Bio Organic Extra Fine Peas, Waitrose & Partners Duchy Organic Garden Peas, Woolworths Australian Peas, and ORE-IDA Green Peas.
The Takeaway for Your Dinner Table
The findings reinforce that frozen vegetables are not just a convenient fallback—they are a reliably nutritious choice when picked wisely. For anyone looking to boost their fiber intake or pack more vitamins into a quick meal, this data provides an easy upgrade. The Consumer Council’s work demonstrates that in the frozen aisle, the green pea is the true heavyweight champion of nutrition.
