Frozen Green Peas Outshine Sweet Corn in Nutritional Test by Consumer Council

The Hong Kong Consumer Council has released a comprehensive analysis of 24 frozen vegetable products, revealing that green peas offer superior nutritional value compared to sweet corn kernels. The study, conducted between November and December 2022, assessed levels of dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals in samples purchased from supermarkets and department stores across the city, finding that peas consistently topped corn in several health metrics while all products complied with local safety regulations.

Test Overview

The Council gathered 24 pre-packaged frozen samples, including 10 sweet corn kernel products and 14 green pea products. Each was tested for nutritional content and potential contaminants.

Nutritional Comparison: Key Findings

Green peas emerged as the clear winner for those seeking higher nutritional density. On average, pea samples contained significantly more dietary fiber per 100 grams, ranging from 4.76 to 8.42 grams, compared to sweet corn’s 2.13 to 4.81 grams. Nine pea products qualified as “high dietary fiber” foods, containing at least 6 grams per 100 grams, while none of the sweet corn samples met this threshold.

Vitamin C levels also favored peas. Sweet corn samples ranged from undetectable to 6.5 mg per 100 grams, while peas boasted 7.9 to 21 mg per 100 grams. Ten pea products were recognized as sources of vitamin C, containing at least 15 mg per 100 grams.

Beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, was more abundant in peas. Sweet corn contained 23.5 to 50.5 micrograms per 100 grams, while peas offered 233 to 362 micrograms per 100 grams, translating to higher vitamin A activity.

Safety Check: Heavy Metals

All samples were free from mycotoxins and heavy metals like mercury and antimony. However, trace amounts of lead, cadmium, and chromium were detected in some products. For example, lead was found in three sweet corn and 11 pea samples, with M&S’s “Supersweet Sweetcorn” and Woolworths’ “Australian Pea” showing the highest levels. Despite this, all detections were within Hong Kong standards, ensuring safety for consumption.

Implications for Your Meal Choices

This study provides valuable guidance for consumers who rely on frozen vegetables for convenience without compromising nutrition. While sweet corn can add sweetness to dishes, green peas are better choices for boosting fiber and vitamin intake. For families looking to enhance their meals, incorporating frozen peas can be a simple upgrade.

The Consumer Council notes that prices and product availability may vary, so shoppers should check current labels. This test is part of ongoing efforts to help Hong Kong residents make informed food choices, and future analyses may explore other frozen vegetables to provide a complete picture.
