A recent report from People’s Daily has sent shockwaves through social media after revealing that a young child in Beijing suffered from relentless coughing and severe diarrhoea—symptoms ultimately traced back to his daily-use straw cup. Despite being rinsed every day, the straw’s interior was found coated in black mould.

Dr. Zhao Lei, deputy director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Union Hospital affiliated with Huazhong University of Science and Technology, explains that straw cups harbour hidden contamination zones far beyond what most users imagine.
