Hong Kong Consumer Council Finds Allergenic Preservatives in Dish Soap Brands

HONG KONG – A comprehensive evaluation of 35 common dishwashing liquids conducted by the Hong Kong Consumer Council (CHOICE) revealed significant disparities in cleaning efficacy and raised crucial health concerns regarding the widespread use of allergenic preservatives in nearly two-thirds of the sampled products. The findings, published in the latest issue of CHOICE magazine, highlight potential risks for consumers with sensitive skin, as several popular formulations contained ingredients linked to contact dermatitis and irritation, prompting the Council to spotlight safer alternatives.

The assessment covered a range of products available across Hong Kong, including general, concentrated, and ultra-concentrated formulas from prominent international and local brands such as Kao Wanteh, Axe Brand, Labor Brand, and Axion. The study’s dual focus centered on performance—measured by the washing volume (number of dishes cleaned per unit of liquid)—and ingredient safety, specifically the detection of common sensitizers. The results indicate a pressing need for manufacturers to reassess formulations and for consumers to exercise greater caution when selecting kitchen essentials.

Safety Concerns Over Detected Preservatives

A significant finding was the detection of sensitizing preservatives—namely Methylisothiazolinone (MIT), Chloromethylisothiazolinone (CMIT), and Benzisothiazolinone (BIT)—in 21 out of the 35 products tested. This means close to 60% of the market samples contained chemicals known to cause adverse skin reactions, including chronic hand dermatitis and intense itching, particularly with prolonged exposure.

This is a serious concern, especially since many of these brands often feature labeling that emphasizes “skin moisturizing,” “natural ingredients,” or “hand protection.” The presence of these potent allergens contradicts the implied gentleness, placing individuals with eczema or sensitive skin at risk.

CHOICE specifically identified major brands, including Clorox and Axe Brand, among those containing these potentially harmful substances. Consumers seeking to mitigate these risks have been advised to carefully scrutinize ingredient labels. Encouragingly, the Council was able to identify 14 dishwashing liquids that were free from any detectable allergenic preservatives, offering immediate safer options for sensitive users.

Performance Varies Widely Among Samples

In addition to safety assessments, the Council rigorously tested the cleaning efficiency of each product. The disparities in washing capacity proved remarkably wide. When tested with equivalent volumes, the most effective sample could wash up to 39 dishes, while the poorest performer could only handle approximately seven. This represents a performance range difference of almost five times.

General formula samples, in particular, showed the most inconsistent results, with the best example cleaning 38.6 dishes and the least effective cleaning only 6.8. Concentrated and ultra-concentrated formulas generally demonstrated better value for money due to their higher performance efficiency, although specific results varied significantly even within these categories.

Top-Rated Products Offer Best Value and Safety

By synthesizing data on cost-effectiveness, actual washing volume, and the crucial safety criteria related to allergenic preservatives, the Consumer Council assigned an overall rating to each product. Five particular products shone brightly, achieving a distinguished 4.5-star rating, positioning them as the best current choices for Hong Kong consumers seeking both potent cleaning power and skin safety.

These findings serve as an important reminder that marketing claims do not always align with actual performance or health implications. Consumers should refer to objective testing data before making purchasing decisions, particularly for products used daily. The Council’s detailed report provides a critical resource for anyone looking to ensure their kitchen cleanup routine is both effective and non-irritating.
