Hong Kong Consumer Council Finds Heavy Metals in All 27 Instant Seaweed Samples, 70% High in Sodium

A comprehensive test by Hong Kong’s Consumer Council has revealed that every single one of 27 instant seaweed products tested contained heavy metals, while seven out of ten were classified as high-sodium foods, raising concerns about hidden health risks in a popular snack.

The watchdog’s investigation, conducted between February and April 2022, examined samples collected from supermarkets, department stores, and specialty food shops across Hong Kong. The selection included 18 snack seaweeds, eight varieties intended for sushi or rice balls, and one shredded seaweed product. Among these, four snack seaweeds were specifically marketed for infants and toddlers under 36 months old. Prices ranged from HK$10 to HK$62 per pack, with per-100-gram costs varying dramatically from HK$40.6 to HK$386.7—a difference of more than eight times. Notably, the most expensive product per 100 grams received the lowest overall rating, suggesting that price does not necessarily reflect quality.

Alarming Sodium Levels Across the Board

The tests assessed both nutritional content and heavy metal contamination. Results showed that 19 out of 27 samples—roughly 70 percent—qualified as high-sodium foods, meaning they contained over 600 milligrams of sodium per 100 grams. Natural sea salt is inherent in seaweed, but manufacturers often add extra salt during processing, pushing sodium levels even higher.

The worst offender among snack seaweeds was Tao Kae Noi Grilled Seaweed Roll Tom Yum Goong Flavour, which contained 2,960 milligrams of sodium per 100 grams—nearly five times the high-sodium threshold. A single piece delivers about 89 milligrams of sodium, accounting for 4 percent of the World Health Organization’s recommended daily limit for adults. Consuming an entire nine-piece box would provide 799 milligrams, or 40 percent of the daily recommended intake.

For sushi and rice-ball seaweeds, Topvalu Salted Nori Seaweed For Rice Balls topped the list with 4,840 milligrams per 100 grams—eight times the high-sodium benchmark.

Heavy Metals Detected in Every Sample

All 27 samples tested positive for cadmium and inorganic arsenic, a known carcinogen. Long-term cadmium exposure can impair kidney function. Additionally, 17 samples contained total mercury, which can damage the nervous system and affect brain development in infants and young children. The Consumer Council noted that health risks remain low if consumption is kept in moderation.

Infant Products Also Raise Concerns

Four products marketed for children under 36 months were all found to be high in sodium. While a single serving contains only 10 to 26 milligrams of sodium, experts warn that regular consumption may condition young children to prefer salty flavors, potentially shaping long-term eating habits.

Top Performers and Key Takeaways

Only one product—Niconico Nori Setouchi Whole Grilled Seaweed—earned a five-star rating from the council. Seven others received four-and-a-half stars, including Nagai Nori Seasoned Seaweed Sheets and several sushi-grade options.

Practical Advice for Consumers

  • Choose original or lightly seasoned varieties to minimize sodium intake.
  • Control portion sizes, especially for children. A single box of some products can deliver 40 percent of the daily sodium limit.
  • Read labels carefully, as price does not correlate with quality or safety.
  • Limit consumption for infants, as even low-sodium servings can condition taste preferences over time.

The Consumer Council emphasizes that while the presence of heavy metals is concerning, the health risk remains low when seaweed is eaten in moderation. For those seeking healthier options, the council recommends selecting products with fewer additives and checking nutritional labels before purchase.

As seaweed continues to grow in popularity as a convenient, nutrient-dense snack, this report serves as a timely reminder that even health-conscious choices require mindful consumption. Consumers are encouraged to diversify their snack options and treat seaweed as an occasional treat rather than a daily staple.
