The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), in an unprecedented collaboration with the Chinese Culinary Institute, has unveiled the “Taste HK” gastronomic guide, a comprehensive selection of 250 standout dining establishments across the territory. This initiative aims to provide locals and visitors with a definitive, insider look at Hong Kong’s culinary landscape, extending far beyond typical fine dining to embrace beloved traditional spots.
The guide, which was officially launched this month, distinguishes itself by relying on the discerning judgment of over 50 local culinary experts. These chefs—alumni of the Chinese Culinary Institute, including Michelin-starred and five-star hotel executive chefs like Wong Lung-to of Fook Lam Moon and Ken Li of Mott 32—personally vetted and nominated their favourite restaurants. This creates a list that prioritises authentic, quality experiences over mere ranking or celebrity status.
A Diverse Culinary Spectrum
Unlike traditional guides that often focus on high-end cuisine, “Taste HK” champion’s Hong Kong’s signature diversity. The 250 establishments selected span all 18 districts and cover an extensive range of categories, ensuring recommendations are accessible whether tourists are exploring bustling city centres or outlying islands.
The guide deliberately includes numerous local institutions, such as cha chaan tengs (Hong Kong-style diners), traditional dessert shops (tong sui), and neighbourhood eateries, alongside acclaimed international and high-end venues. The culinary palette showcased is remarkably broad, encompassing Chinese, Western, Japanese, Korean, and various fusion cuisines. Furthermore, the HKTB ensured the inclusion of venues holding Halal certifications and those recognised for Quality Tourism Services, reflecting Hong Kong’s role as a global city.
Highlighting Local Gems and Premier Dining
Several iconic local spots earned recognition from the panel of chefs, signifying a shift toward celebrating everyday culinary excellence. Notable inclusions cover a spectrum from street food staples to premier dining destinations:
- Local Favourites: Highly reviewed spots include Kung Wo Beancurd Factory in Sham Shui Po, the popular Wahso Cafe, and Cheung Chau Bing Sutt, alongside nostalgic locations like Heung Heung Yuen Restaurant, and the exceptional claypot rice specialist, Cheerful Pot.
- Renowned Chinese Cuisine: The list features established names in Chinese gastronomy, such as the three-Michelin-starred Fook Lam Moon, contemporary Chinese dining at Tang’s, and the well-regarded Zhang Gong Guan and Chung’s Cuisine.
- Specialty and International: Seafood enthusiasts will find recommendations like Chuen Kee Seafood Restaurant in Sai Kung, while global cuisine is represented by venues such as the Michelin-rated Italian restaurant CIAK, and 3A Kitchen.
The electronic format ensures the guide’s utility for both residents and travellers seeking spontaneous dining experiences. The HKTB has published the entire list online, offering an interactive digital platform where users can filter results by district, cuisine, or specific service requirements (e.g., Halal certification). A downloadable PDF version is also available.
For maximum accessibility, the HKTB is integrating the guide into the urban environment. Dedicated QR codes have been placed at key locations, including MTR stations, bus stops, and main thoroughfares. Tourists can simply scan these codes to instantly pull up chef recommendations for restaurants within the immediate vicinity, facilitating “eat as you go” exploration.
Global Attention Anticipated
The launch of the “Taste HK” guide comes ahead of a significant culinary event: the “Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants” awards ceremony, which Hong Kong is set to host in March. The HKTB anticipates that the guide will be a crucial resource for international media, food critics, and social media influencers visiting the city for the awards. This is expected to intensify global focus on Hong Kong’s diverse food culture, cementing its reputation as a leading international culinary destination. Visitors are encouraged to use the guide’s official website for real-time information and planning.
