Wagyu Yakiniku JUN, one of Hong Kong’s most trusted Japanese barbecue establishments, has announced the revival of its wildly popular “Golden Cut Wagyu” event this August. Diners will not only witness master butchers hand-carve premium A5 wagyu in a sensory showcase but also have a shot at winning the entire prized cut—simply by guessing its weight. The challenge returns on two evenings in August, with no minimum spend required to participate.
The Return of a Fan Favorite
After a debut that drew enthusiastic crowds, the “Golden Cut Wagyu” weight-guessing game is back by popular demand. On August 14 and August 28, 2024 at 7:30 PM, each table at either of the restaurant’s two locations—Tsim Sha Tsui and Causeway Bay—will receive one chance to estimate the exact weight of a freshly hand-carved A5 wagyu slab. The diner (or group) whose guess comes closest takes the entire block home, free of charge. In the event of a tie, the prize is split equally among the winners.
The event combines theatre and gastronomy: guests can watch skilled artisans slice through marbled beef, hearing the knife’s rhythm and seeing the glistening fat render under heat—a full sensory experience that goes beyond eating.
How the Weight-Guessing Challenge Works
- Eligibility: All dine-in customers, regardless of spending amount, can join. No minimum purchase required.
- Participation: One guess per table per evening. Simply submit your weight estimate during the event.
- Prize: A single block of top-tier A5 wagyu is awarded each night. Winners are announced on the spot.
- Fine print: The prize cannot be exchanged for cash or other products. The restaurant reserves final judgment on any disputes.
Seasonal Wagyu Lineup: From Kagoshima to Hokkaido
Wagyu Yakiniku JUN sources its beef directly from Japan’s National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations (Zen-Noh), ensuring authenticity and traceability. The restaurant has operated for over a decade in Hong Kong, earning a loyal following among wagyu connoisseurs.
Currently, through July, the menu highlights Kagoshima A5 wagyu, prized for its cherry-red flesh interlaced with fine, marble-like fat that melts at a low temperature, yielding a buttery, melt-in-the-mouth texture. Starting in August and continuing through September, the restaurant will shift focus to Hokkaido wagyu. Raised in Hokkaido’s cold climate and pristine water conditions, this beef is celebrated for its juiciness, deep flavor, and tender bite.
Beyond seasonal offerings, the restaurant serves over 10 cuts from various Japanese prefectures, including sirloin, ribeye, steak meat, shoulder loin, triangle steak, red meat, three-tendon steak, premium steak, and more—appealing to both purists and adventurous eaters.
How to Participate
Bookings are now open for both nights. Diners are encouraged to gather friends and family for a meal that combines skill-testing fun with exceptional beef.

Why This Matters for Hong Kong Foodies
The “Golden Cut Wagyu” event reflects a broader trend in Hong Kong’s dining scene: experiential eating that blends entertainment with quality ingredients. For wagyu enthusiasts, it offers a rare chance to interact directly with the craft—and potentially leave with a prize worth thousands of dollars. As the restaurant rotates its regional sourcing, diners also gain insight into how terroir influences beef flavor, from Kagoshima’s lush pastures to Hokkaido’s snow-fed farms.
Actionable tip: Arrive early on event nights to secure a good table, and consider bringing a group to pool your guessing instincts. For those who miss out, the regular menu remains a safe bet for top-tier Japanese barbecue.
