New research published in the European Heart Journal warns that functional iron deficiency among middle-aged adults could significantly increase the risk of heart disease and fatal cardiovascular events.
Iron is an essential nutrient that plays a critical role in human health, serving as a key component in the production of haemoglobin—the protein responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body and supporting immune function. The Study: 13 Years of Data, Over 12,000 Participants
Researchers analysed health data from 12,164 adults with an average age of 59, comprising 55% women and 45% men. Over a follow-up period of 13.3 years, participants were divided into three distinct groups based on their iron profiles:
- Group 1: Individuals with straightforward iron deficiency, characterised by low iron stores.
- Group 2: Those with functional iron deficiency, where iron is stored in the body but cannot be effectively released for use by cells.
- Group 3: A healthy control group with normal iron levels.
The results were striking. Compared to the healthy control group, participants in Group 2—those with functional iron deficiency—faced a 24% higher risk of developing coronary heart disease and a 26% increased risk of death from cardiovascular causes. Meanwhile, individuals in Group 1 with simple iron deficiency were 20% more likely to develop coronary heart disease.
Why Functional Iron Deficiency Is Particularly Dangerous
Functional iron deficiency is often harder to detect than standard anaemia because blood tests may show adequate iron stores. However, the body’s inability to mobilise this iron for oxygen transport and enzymatic functions can silently strain the cardiovascular system over time. Experts believe this hidden form of deficiency may accelerate arterial damage and impair the heart’s ability to cope with oxidative stress.
“This research highlights a vulnerable population that might otherwise be overlooked,” said a spokesperson for the European Society of Cardiology. “Standard screening for iron deficiency may not catch functional cases, yet the cardiovascular risks are substantial.”
