Japan’s Top Coffee Concentrate Revealed: 7-Eleven Beats Starbucks in Blind Taste Test

The demand for instant coffee concentrates has surged among Hong Kong professionals seeking café-quality beverages at home or in the office. A rigorous blind taste test conducted by Japan’s esteemed MONOQLO magazine, in collaboration with coffee expert and Japan Coffee Shop Planning Association chairperson Sanae Tomita, has now ranked ten popular sugar-free options—with a surprising victor that unseats global giant Starbucks.

Coffee lovers constantly seek convenience without compromising flavour. Sugar-free coffee concentrates, requiring only water or milk to produce an iced Americano or latte, have become household staples. But with countless brands flooding the market, identifying the best value product can be daunting. Responding to this confusion, the MONOQLO editorial team organised a systematic evaluation, inviting chef and coffee authority Sanae Tomita to conduct blind tastings of ten widely available sugar-free concentrates. Each product was tested as iced coffee, assessed across three critical criteria: taste (authenticity compared to freshly brewed iced coffee), aroma (intensity and quality), and repeat purchase likelihood (overall satisfaction prompting future buys).

The Rise of Instant Coffee Concentrates

The convenience factor is undeniable. A single squeeze of liquid concentrate into cold water or milk yields a consistent drink in seconds—no brewing, no waiting. This has fueled explosive growth in the segment, particularly among younger urbanites balancing hectic schedules. Yet quality varies dramatically, as MONOQLO’s findings illustrate.

Top Performers: A-Grade Winners

Claiming the top spot and the prestigious Gold Prize is 7-Eleven’s 7-Premium Unsweetened Coffee Concentrate. Experts praised its deep, rich bitterness and clean aftertaste, closely mimicking authentic brewed coffee. The inviting aroma and versatility—equally effective as a black coffee or with milk—earned it unanimous acclaim. Tomita described it as a thoroughly satisfying experience, ideal for a quick yet quality iced coffee fix.

The runner-up, UCC THE BLEND Unsweetened Iced Coffee Concentrate, also achieved an A-grade rating. Though slightly milder in bitterness, it offers a smooth, refreshing profile with pure coffee notes. Tomita strongly recommended pairing it with milk, which amplifies its richness and complexity.

Mid-Range and Disappointing Results

Third place went to AGF BLENDY Unsweetened Concentrate, valued for its familiar nutty and caramel undertones. However, testers noted its coffee intensity felt somewhat diluted, limiting overall satisfaction.

SUNTORY CRAFT BOSS Unsweetened Concentrate secured fourth place with a moderate acidity and soft texture, praised for its excellent value and easy drinkability.

Perhaps the most surprising result was Nestlé Japan’s Starbucks Unsweetened Handcrafted Coffee, which landed only fifth. While it exhibited a pleasant chocolate aroma, Tomita pointed out an overpowering artificial flavour that masked the coffee’s natural bitterness. Additionally, at approximately 54 yen per serving, experts deemed its cost-to-quality ratio unfavourable, suggesting it might serve better as a culinary ingredient than a standalone beverage.

Other B-grade entries included NESCAFE EXCELLA (tied for sixth), DOUTOR COFFEE Unsweetened Concentrate (seventh), and KALDI Unsweetened Concentrate (eighth). DOUTOR was criticised for a faint burnt soy sauce scent, while KALDI disappointed experts given its otherwise high bean quality.

The Bottom of the List

Two products received C-grade ratings. Ninth place went to Ito En’s TULLY’S COFFEE Espresso Base, which surprisingly lacked the expected bitterness of an espresso and instead exhibited high acidity. Nestlé Japan’s NESCAFE Espresso Base Unsweetened ranked last, described as nearly devoid of coffee bitterness and featuring the weakest aroma among all tested items.

Broader Impact: What This Means for Consumers

The MONOQLO findings underscore that brand recognition does not guarantee superior taste. 7-Eleven’s budget-friendly private label outperformed premium competitors, proving that affordability and quality can coexist. For Hong Kong consumers, this offers a clear takeaway: don’t judge a concentrate by its packaging. When selecting a sugar-free coffee concentrate, consider factors like roast depth, aroma authenticity, and versatility with milk. The convenience of liquid concentrates is here to stay, but informed choices ensure every cup is worth the sip.
