JW Marriott Invites Diners to Vote in Eco-Friendly Cooking Competition Final

From November 2 to 21, 2026, Hong Kong’s JW Marriott Hotel is transforming its buffet into a platform for sustainability, hosting the final round of the 2026 Green Cooking Idea competition. Guests at The Lounge can sample nine groundbreaking low-carbon dishes created by chefs across three categories and cast their votes for the winner, who will take home a HKD 36,000 hotel and dining package. Organized by the Chinese Women Chefs Association and the Hong Kong International Culinary Competition Association, this event highlights all-electric cooking techniques and locally sourced ingredients.

A New Standard for Sustainable Dining

The competition challenges participants to design flavorful dishes that minimize environmental impact through electric cooking and local produce. Contestants are divided into three groups: Youth Chefs (ages 16–22), Amateur Cooks (23 or older), and Professional Chefs (23 or older with at least two years of full-time experience). Each group received cash prizes earlier in the competition and now competes for the grand award. By focusing on electric appliances and ingredients from the “Premium Hong Kong Brand” initiative—such as edible flowers—the event promotes reduced energy use and supports local farmers.

The Finalists and Their Creations

Each category emphasizes a different protein. Youth Chefs work with chicken or duck, presenting dishes like “Red Wine and Mushroom Duck Wellington,” “Green Poultry Trio,” and “Glutinous Rice-Stuffed Phoenix Legs.” The Amateur group features beef or pork in plates such as “Golden Palace,” “Amber Glaze Meat,” and “Hidden Rhythms.” Professionals highlight fish or shrimp with entries including “Sour Cabbage Knock Knock Shrimp,” “Sichuan Shrimp Crispy Bags,” and “Twilight Cod with Golden Shrimp.” All recipes incorporate Exotica Umami sauce and Dao Ma peanut oil to enhance flavor while maintaining efficiency.

An Interactive Dining Experience

Diners at The Lounge can taste these nine dishes alongside the regular buffet, which features ice seafood, Peking duck, teppanyaki abalone, handmade wontons, and a homemade chocolate station with flavors like matcha and nut praline. After sampling, each guest can vote for their preferred dish, directly influencing the final outcome. The buffet is available Monday to Saturday from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Prices start at HKD 598 per adult on weekdays and HKD 638 on weekends, with a 10% service charge. Children aged 3–12 dine for HKD 418 and HKD 448 respectively.

Implications for the Future of Food

This initiative extends beyond a single competition. It encourages the hospitality industry to explore greener cooking methods and gives diners a tangible role in promoting sustainability. By voting, guests support chefs who are rethinking traditional energy-intensive practices, potentially inspiring broader adoption of electric cooking and local sourcing in Hong Kong’s culinary scene.

How to Get Involved

Reservations are recommended, as availability is limited. Prices and terms are subject to change, so checking the booking platform in advance is advised. Whether you are a food enthusiast or an advocate for eco-conscious living, this event offers a rare chance to savor innovation and shape the future of dining. Stay tuned for the winner announcement after the voting period concludes.
