Little Napoli Reopens in Wan Chai, Serving Authentic Neapolitan Pizza

Little Napoli, the popular Neapolitan pizzeria recognized by the Michelin Guide, has officially relaunched its operations in Wan Chai after a brief hiatus, bringing its authentic Italian flavours and a newly expanded menu to Hong Kong Island’s dining scene. Since its initial opening in Happy Valley in 2021, the establishment, helmed by Neapolitan Chef Gavino Pilo, garnered a loyal following for its traditional, high-quality handcrafted pizzas. The new space, which commenced service on December 10, offers enhanced indoor seating, a distinct Southern Italian ambiance, and several exciting new culinary creations, ensuring the continuation of its reputation for genuine Italian gastronomy.

The relocation follows a temporary closure on October 4, which disappointed many devoted patrons. The Wan Chai premises have undergone significant redesign, featuring specially imported, vintage-style floor tiles from Italy intended to evoke the atmosphere of a classic, rustic Neapolitan street eatery. This aesthetic upgrade complements the core focus on authenticity: crafting pizzas cooked in a 400°C imported Neapolitan stone oven. This intense heat is crucial for achieving the characteristic crust—crisp on the outside, yet soft and elastic within.

Highlighting Innovation with Traditional Techniques

Chef Pilo’s commitment to using premium ingredients sourced directly from his Italian homeland remains central to Little Napoli’s success. While classic pizzas like the Margherita continue to anchor the menu, the new location introduces innovative offerings designed for both dine-in enjoyment and modern convenience.

A standout addition is the Pizza Portafoglio or ‘Wallet Pizza’ series. Inspired by Naples’ street food culture where pizza is folded for ease of transport, this feature caters perfectly to on-the-go diners. The series includes the traditional folded Margherita alongside two novel, richly flavoured variations:

  • Contadina: A blend of rustic ingredients.
  • Zingara: Highly recommended for meat lovers, featuring generous amounts of Parma ham.

Furthermore, the menu sees an expansion of Italian fried specialties, known as Pizza Fritta. A notable new item in this category is the Dondiego, a fried calzone that, despite its preparation method, maintains a surprisingly light, non-oily texture.

Beyond Pizza: Expanding the Neapolitan Experience

To broaden the Southern Italian culinary journey, Little Napoli’s Wan Chai outpost has significantly expanded its selection of authentic Neapolitan small plates, or stuzzichini.

One particularly intriguing addition is the Melanzane in Carrozza, a fried eggplant preparation that reviewers found remarkably delicate, with a texture so unique it prompted comparisons to fish rather than a typical vegetable dish. The layered structure of this appetiser delivers a complex mouthfeel, proving that traditional techniques can produce unexpected and delightful results.

For those eager to fully immerse themselves in the genuine taste of Naples, understanding the proper way to consume a Neapolitan pizza is essential. Due to the ultra-thin, soft centre of authentic Neapolitan dough, traditional lifting often causes toppings to slide off. The correct, street-wise method involves cutting the pizza into quarters and then folding each piece in half (known as a libretto or “like a book”). This technique neatly encases the cheese and sauce, allowing diners to enjoy the crust’s full, wheaty flavour without mess.

Little Napoli has thoughtfully accommodated this tradition, providing guides in their takeaway packaging to educate Hong Kong diners on this classic Neapolitan eating style.

With its renewed vibrant setting, commitment to authentic, imported ingredients, and an expanded repertoire of traditional and innovative Italian items, Little Napoli’s Wan Chai location solidifies its position as a destination for serious Italian food enthusiasts across Hong Kong. Diners can expect not just a meal, but a genuine taste of Southern Italian culture right on Hong Kong Island.
