Little Napoli, the popular Neapolitan pizzeria lauded for its authentic, high-quality handmade pizzas, officially reopened its doors in Wan Chai on December 10, transitioning from its beloved original location in Happy Valley. After a two-month hiatus beginning October 4, 2023, the Michelin-recognized eatery is now welcoming diners to its expanded premises on Hong Kong Island, complete with a fresh menu that introduces new Mediterranean flavors and convenient Neapolitan street food options, alongside a revamped interior design that evokes the nostalgic spirit of Southern Italy.
The successful relocation marks an exciting new chapter for the restaurant, which built a loyal following since its 2021 inception. At the heart of Little Napoli’s continued success is proprietor and chef Gavino Pilo, a native of Naples, Italy. Chef Pilo remains dedicated to the tradition of pizza napoletana, ensuring that every pizza adheres strictly to regional standards, utilizing imported ingredients from his hometown and baking them at an intense 400-degree Celsius heat in a stone oven shipped directly from Naples. This rigorous process yields the hallmark crust of Neapolitan pizza—crisp on the outside, soft and chewy within, and loaded with flavorful toppings.
Elevated Dining Experience and New Offerings
The new Wan Chai location offers substantially more indoor seating space than its predecessor, enhancing the overall dining experience. To solidify the authentic ambiance, the restaurant sourced custom-made, antique-style floor tiles from Italy, immersing patrons in the rustic, charming atmosphere of a traditional Southern Italian trattoria.
Beyond the classic pizzas that secured Little Napoli’s reputation, the new menu heavily emphasizes convenience and regional street fare, highlighted by the exciting debut of the Pizza Portafoglio (Wallet Pizza) series.
Introducing the “Wallet Pizza”
Rooted in the casual street food culture of Naples, the Pizza Portafoglio is designed for easy, on-the-go consumption, mirroring the way Neapolitans famously eat their pizza folded like a wallet. The series transforms the classic Margherita into a creative, convenient format. New flavor additions to this line include:
- Contadina: Featuring a unique mix of rustic, farm-fresh ingredients.
- Zingara: A savory option generously topped with cured meat, particularly Parma ham, catering to fans of rich, meaty flavors.
Complementing this, the menu expands its selection of Pizza Fritta (Fried Italian Calzones). One notable addition is the Dondiego, a fried delight that maintains a surprisingly non-greasy texture, providing a crunchy exterior and a soft, flavorful filling—a perfect savory snack or appetizer.
Embracing Authentic Neapolitan Tradition
Little Napoli also takes the opportunity at its new location to educate diners on the traditional way Neapolitan pizza is consumed. Historically a street food, authentic Neapolitan pizza is characterized by its pliable, thin center. To prevent toppings from spilling, especially when standing, diners should cut the pizza into quarters and fold each slice inward twice. This distinctive eating method locks in the cheese and sauce, allowing one to maximize the enjoyment of the crust’s smoky char and rich wheat flavor. The restaurant thoughtfully includes visual instructions on its takeaway boxes to guide first-time eaters.
Furthermore, the new venue features an expanded selection of sfizi, or traditional Neapolitan snacks. A standout among these is the intriguing Melanzane in Carrozza, a cheese and eggplant delight cooked to perfection. Diners often find the texture surprisingly firm and layered, resembling fish more than the typical soft eggplant preparation.
Little Napoli’s move to Wan Chai and its refined menu underscore a commitment to providing an immersive and authentic Neapolitan culinary experience in Hong Kong. By expanding its space, adding culturally significant street food items like the Pizza Portafoglio, and maintaining its high standards for ingredient sourcing and preparation, Little Napoli is well-positioned to maintain its status as a must-visit destination for Italian food aficionados on Hong Kong Island.
