Michelin-recognized pizzeria Little Napoli has returned to Hong Kong’s dining scene, opening a larger Wan Chai location on December 10 that introduces a new Wallet Pizza series, revived Neapolitan street snacks, and a warm vintage-inspired setting.
After shuttering its original Happy Valley outpost on October 4, 2024—much to the dismay of loyal regulars—the acclaimed pizzeria has found a new home in Wan Chai. Owner-chef Gavino Pilo, a native of Naples, has used the relocation to double down on authenticity: custom vintage-style floor tiles were imported from Italy, and the expanded indoor dining area now seats more guests while evoking the easygoing charm of a southern Italian bottega.
A New Home in Wan Chai
Little Napoli first opened its doors in Happy Valley in 2021 and quickly earned a devoted following for its handmade Neapolitan pizzas, baked in a 400°C stone oven imported from Naples. The brief closure left fans scrambling for their fix of Pilo’s signature airy crust and premium Italian toppings. Now, the Wan Chai branch offers not only more space but also a design that transports diners directly to the streets of Naples.
The new address—details of which are available on the restaurant’s official channels—marks a strategic shift into one of Hong Kong Island’s most vibrant food districts, putting Little Napoli in direct competition with other Italian newcomers.
Authentic Craftsmanship and Ingredients
Pilo’s philosophy remains unchanged: imported flour, San Marzano tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, and extra-virgin olive oil from Campania form the backbone of every pizza. The high-temperature cooking method produces a crust that is simultaneously crisp on the outside and impossibly soft inside—a hallmark of true Neapolitan style.
“Every ingredient tells a story of where it comes from,” Pilo has shared in previous interviews. “That is why we source directly from my hometown.”
New Menu Innovations
The Wan Chai debut comes with several exciting additions:
- Pizza Portafoglio (“Wallet Pizza”) – A foldable pizza designed for easy takeaway, inspired by the classic Neapolitan street food. The base Margherita is joined by two new flavours: Contadina (rustic vegetables and cheese) and Zingara (loaded with generous slices of Parma ham).
- Pizza Fritta Dondiego – A light, fried pizza parcel that surprises with a non-greasy, airy texture. The long shape is cut in half for sharing, and first-tasters report it tastes nothing like heavy fried dough.
- Traditional Pizza Line-up – Classic favourites such as Margherita, Marinara, and Diavola remain available, with prices displayed on the in-store menu.
- Neapolitan Snacks – New side dishes include Melanzane in Carrozza, layered fried eggplant that one reviewer described as “more like fish than vegetable,” and other antipasti that broaden the meal experience beyond pizza.
The Art of Eating Neapolitan Pizza
Pilo and his team also educate customers on proper consumption. Authentic Neapolitan pizza is extremely soft in the centre—picking up a whole slice often leads to toppings sliding off. The recommended method: cut the pizza into four pieces and fold each quarter in half. The restaurant even includes illustrated instructions in takeaway boxes, ensuring every guest enjoys the full flavour without mess.
A Taste of Naples in Hong Kong
Little Napoli’s reopening signals more than just a new address—it reflects a growing appetite for regional Italian cuisine in Hong Kong, where diners increasingly seek out specialist operators rather than generic trattorias. With its expanded space, innovative wallet-friendly pizza format, and uncompromising ingredients, the Wan Chai branch is poised to become a destination for both longtime fans and curious newcomers.
For those eager to experience Pilo’s craft, the restaurant is now open daily. Reservations are recommended, and takeaway orders can be placed via the restaurant’s website or partner delivery apps. Full menu prices are available in-store and on social media.
