Little Napoli Reopens Mega Wanchai Location, Expands Authentic Neapolitan Menu

Beloved Neapolitan pizzeria Little Napoli has officially relocated and reopened its doors in Wanchai, establishing a larger footprint on Hong Kong Island. After a temporary closure that began in October, the highly acclaimed establishment, known for its authentic, Michelin-recognized artisanal pizzas, resumed operations on December 10, delivering an enhanced dining experience complete with expanded indoor seating, Southern Italian ambiance, and an exciting introduction of new Mediterranean-inspired dishes.

Head Chef and owner Gavino Pilo, a native of Naples, continues his mission to champion traditional Neapolitan pizza making. Since its 2021 debut in Happy Valley, Little Napoli built a dedicated following through its commitment to sourcing quality ingredients directly from Italy and employing a traditional imported stone oven, which fires pizzas at 400°C—the standard for achieving the definitive chewy-yet-crisp crust of a pizza Napoletana.

Embracing the Mediterranean Charm and Expanded Space

The new Wanchai location is not merely an extension but a complete transformation. The redesigned interior transports diners directly to Southern Italy, featuring custom vintage-style floor tiles imported specifically from Italy. This attention to detail dramatically enhances the dining environment, allowing patrons to feel momentarily immersed in a Neapolitan street scene while enjoying their meal. Crucially, the move has provided the restaurant with much-needed capacity, fulfilling a long-standing demand from its consistently high volume of loyal customers.

The expansion comes hand-in-hand with an ambitious menu update designed to appeal to both purists and those seeking innovative Italian flavours.

New Formats and Flavours for Pizza Enthusiasts

Little Napoli introduces several highly anticipated items, including a focus on portability and street food culture, reminiscent of Naples itself:

The “Wallet Pizza” Collection

A standout addition is the Pizza Portafoglio (or ‘Wallet Pizza’) series, a street-food innovation designed for easy consumption on the move. This classic Neapolitan technique involves folding the soft pizza dough onto itself, resembling a wallet, making it perfect for takeaway. While the classic Margherita is offered in this format, Chef Pilo has added two inventive new flavours:

  • Contadina: A fresh, rustic combination.
  • Zingara: A meat-lover’s delight, notably generous with Parma ham.

Refined Neapolitan Fried Favourites

The menu also sees expansion in the Pizza Fritta (fried calzone) category, alongside new savory Neapolitan snacks. One such fried calzone, the Dondiego, offers a surprisingly light, non-oily texture despite being fried. The newly added appetizer, Melanzane in Carrozza (fried mozzarella and eggplant sandwiches), has received particular praise for its sophisticated layering and unique texture, challenging preconceived notions about plant-based fried food.

The Art of Eating Authentic Neapolitan Pizza

For Hong Kong diners unfamiliar with Neapolitan tradition, the restaurant offers helpful guidance on enjoying authentic pizza. Unlike firmer, American-style pizzas, genuine Neapolitan pizza is incredibly soft and thin in the centre, making a traditional slice-by-slice approach messy.

To fully appreciate the traditional crust aroma and prevent toppings from spilling, the correct technique involves:

  1. Cutting the pizza into four sections.
  2. Folding each section twice (like a wallet).
  3. Eating the folded slice from the pointed end.

Little Napoli has thoughtfully included instructions on their takeout boxes, ensuring everyone can enjoy the authentic experience whether dining in or carrying out.

By broadening its physical and culinary offerings, Little Napoli cements its status as a cornerstone of authentic Italian cuisine in Hong Kong. The move to Wanchai signifies a confident step forward, promising to draw new diners while satisfying the established demand for Chef Pilo’s expert hand-tossed, high-heat artistry. This relocation not only revives a city favourite but also enriches the diverse dining landscape of Hong Kong Island with its vibrant, genuine taste of Naples.
