Michelin-Recognized Little Napoli Relaunches in Wanchai with Expanded Space, New Dishes

After a brief hiatus, Little Napoli, the highly popular pizzeria known for its authentic Neapolitan-style pies, has triumphantly reopened its doors in a new, expanded location in Wanchai. The restaurant, which achieved considerable acclaim in its original Happy Valley location since 2021, commenced service at the new Hong Kong Island premises on December 10, bringing its renowned, high-quality artisanal pizza—along with several exciting menu additions—to a broader audience in a setting designed to evoke the vibrant atmosphere of Southern Italy.

The hiatus, which began on October 4, had prompted disappointment among its devoted clientele. However, the Wanchai relaunch signals a significant step forward for the eatery, which is helmed by owner and chef Gavino Pilo, a native of Naples, Italy. Pilo remains committed to the established practices that earned the brand its reputation, including sourcing premium ingredients directly from his homeland and utilizing a specialized, imported Neapolitan stone oven fired to 400°C. This technique ensures the classic characteristics of true Neapolitan pizza: a tender, soft interior bordered by a crisp, charred crust.

Elevated Dining Experience and Mediterranean Flavors

The new Wanchai location is not merely a relocation but an upgrade, featuring substantially expanded indoor dining space. Pilo paid meticulous attention to the interior design, incorporating custom-ordered, vintage-style floor tiles imported from Italy to create an authentic, rustic Mediterranean ambience. This environmental upgrade is intended to transport diners to a classic Neapolitan pizzeria experience.

In conjunction with the move, Little Napoli has unveiled several anticipated additions to its menu, focusing on innovative Mediterranean interpretations alongside its perennial favourites.

A key highlight is the introduction of the Pizza Portafoglio (Wallet Pizza) series. Inspired by the traditional concept of Neapolitan pizza as street food—folded for easy consumption while walking—the Wallet Pizza is presented in a practical, foldable format perfect for takeout. The classic Margherita is offered in this new style, alongside two entirely new regional creations:

  • Contadina: A fresh, seasonal blend featuring rustic ingredients.
  • Zingara: A protein-forward option laden with generous servings of Parma Ham, designed to appeal to meat enthusiasts.

Expanding Culinary Horizons with Authentic Neapolitan Street Food

Beyond the new pizza varieties, the Wanchai menu broadens its scope with an enriched selection of Pizza Fritta (fried calzones) and traditional Neapolitan snacks. One of the standout additions in the fried savory pastry category is the Dondiego, a variation of the Pizza Fritta praised by initial tasters for its surprisingly non-greasy texture and satisfyingly crisp exterior.

Another noteworthy inclusion among the new Neapolitan small plates is the Melanzane in Carrozza. This dish, which traditionally features fried mozzarella sandwiches, offers a unique textural experience, with some patrons noting that the layered eggplant provides an unexpected, almost ‘fish-like’ richness, challenging preconceptions of the vegetable.

The enduring success of Little Napoli hinges on Chef Pilo’s fidelity to traditional Neapolitan pizza craftsmanship. For newcomers, Little Napoli staff and even its takeout boxes offer instructions on the proper way to eat an authentic Neapolitan pizza. Given the soft, delicate centre—often only a few millimeters thick—the correct method involves cutting the pie into four pieces and folding each piece twice. This protects the toppings and allows for the full enjoyment of the dough’s flavour.

Little Napoli’s ambitious expansion into Wanchai, coupled with its commitment to authentic techniques and innovative menu enhancements, reaffirms its status as a destination for high-quality Italian cuisine in Hong Kong. Food lovers are encouraged to visit the new premises to sample the enhanced street food and dining experience.
