Celebrated Neapolitan pizzeria Little Napoli has officially commenced operations in Wan Chai, marking a significant return for the brand following the closure of its popular Happy Valley flagship last October. The new venue, which opened its doors on December 10, brings authentic Italian flavors to a broader audience on Hong Kong Island, featuring an expanded dining space and a menu of exclusive new creations.
Since its inception in 2021, the establishment has garnered a dedicated following, earning Michelin recognition for its commitment to traditional culinary standards. The restaurant is helmed by Chef Gavino Pilo, a native of Naples who prioritizes the integrity of his craft. Pilo utilizes a specialized stone oven imported directly from Naples, operating at intense temperatures of 400 degrees Celsius. This method produces the signature Neapolitan texture: a crust that is distinctively crispy on the outside while remaining soft and airy within, complemented by high-quality ingredients sourced from the chef’s hometown.
A Transportive Dining Environment
The relocation has allowed for a significant upgrade in ambiance. The Wan Chai site features custom-ordered vintage-style tiles imported directly from Italy, designed to evoke the nostalgic atmosphere of Southern Italian streets. This attention to interior detail aims to offer diners an immersive experience, transporting them from the bustle of Hong Kong to the Mediterranean coast.
Introducing the “Wallet Pizza” Series
Adapting to the dining habits of the Wan Chai crowd, Little Napoli has launched the innovative Pizza Portafoglio, or “Wallet Pizza.” This format reimagines the classic Margherita by folding the pizza into a portable parcel, making it an ideal option for takeaway or eating on the go without sacrificing structural integrity.
The menu expansion includes two new flavors for the Wallet series:
- Contadina: A rustic blend of flavors.
- Zingara: A meat-lover’s dream, generously topped with Parma ham.
Fried Specialties and Traditional Snacks
Beyond baked pizzas, the kitchen has expanded its offerings to include Pizza Fritta (fried pizza). The Dondiego variety has been highlighted for its non-greasy finish and savory profile, offering a satisfying crunch that gives way to a soft, flavorful filling.
Additionally, the snack menu now features Melanzane in Carrozza, a unique eggplant dish. Initial tastings suggest a complex texture with distinct layers, offering a flavor profile that surprises many diners with its depth.
The Art of Consumption
For those unfamiliar with Neapolitan traditions, the restaurant provides guidance on proper consumption. Traditional Neapolitan pizza centers are extremely soft, often only millimeters thick. To prevent toppings from sliding off, the correct method involves cutting the pizza into quarters and folding the slices lengthwise. This technique ensures the perfect ratio of crust to topping in every bite.
With its strategic new location and a menu that balances reverence for tradition with modern convenience, Little Napoli is poised to reclaim its status as a top destination for Italian cuisine in Hong Kong. The restaurant is now open for service, inviting both returning loyalists and new patrons to experience the refreshed venue.
