Little Napoli, the highly popular pizzeria celebrated for its authentic Neapolitan-style offerings, has officially reopened its doors in a new, expanded location in Wanchai, relaunching operations on December 10, following a brief closure. The restaurant, which garnered a strong following since its 2021 debut in Happy Valley, now offers diners on Hong Kong Island an enhanced experience, complete with a larger indoor seating area, a newly refined menu, and a meticulously designed interior reminiscent of a nostalgic South Italian eatery.
The celebrated establishment, founded by Naples native Chef Gavino Pilo, specializes in traditional, hand-tossed Neapolitan pizza. Chef Pilo maintains strict fidelity to authentic methods, utilizing premium ingredients imported directly from his hometown and employing a 400-degree imported brick oven. This high-heat technique ensures the characteristic crispy yet pliable crust and richly flavored toppings that secured the restaurant’s Michelin recognition. The relocation to Wanchai marks a significant expansion for the brand, addressing the overwhelming demand experienced at Litte Napoli’s original, smaller premises.
Enhanced Dining and New Culinary Directions
The new location transcends a mere change of address; it represents an upgrade in the dining environment and culinary scope. The interior design features custom-ordered, vintage-style floor tiles from Italy, immediately transporting guests to a charming, rustic street scene in Southern Italy.
Beyond the classic traditional pizzas, the menu benefits from several highly anticipated additions focusing on innovative, Mediterranean-inspired recipes and a selection of traditional Neapolitan street snacks.
Introducing the Pizza Portafoglio Series
A standout new development is the Pizza Portafoglio—or “Wallet Pizza”—series, designed specifically for on-the-go enjoyment, echoing Naples’ street food culture. These pizzas are ingeniously folded to create a convenient, envelope-like shape that prevents fillings from spilling.
Key additions to the Pizza Portafoglio line include:
- Contadina: A rustic combination featuring fresh, seasonal produce.
- Zingara: A decadent, meat-forward option generously topped with Parma ham, appealing directly to carnivores.
Furthermore, the restaurant has introduced new varieties of Pizza Fritta (fried Italian turnovers). These turnovers, praised by early tasters for their light, non-greasy texture, provide crispy exteriors and soft, flavourful interiors, perfect for a quick snack or appetizer. The Dondiego version, for example, is noted for its unexpectedly fish-like texture, challenging preconceptions about fried appetizers.
The Art of Eating Authentic Pizza
Little Napoli is also dedicated to educating Hong Kong diners on the proper consumption of authentic Neapolitan pizza. Unlike their stiffer counterparts, truly Neapolitan pizzas are exceptionally soft, particularly in the center.
To enjoy the delicacy properly, the traditional method involves cutting the pizza into four slices, then folding each slice lengthwise twice. This technique, often referred to as a portafoglio (like a wallet, hence the name of the new pizza series), prevents the thin base from becoming messy and concentrates the flavours, allowing diners to appreciate the dough’s character. The restaurant even includes helpful instructions with its takeaway orders.
Expanding the Neapolitan Experience
In addition to the expanded pizza selection, the Wanchai location has broadened its offering of classic Neapolitan small bites, designed to complement the main course and offer a more holistic taste experience of Southern Italian gastronomy.
One notable newcomer to the small plates section is the Melanzane in Carrozza. This item, which involves a battered and fried preparation primarily featuring eggplant and cheese, has reportedly surprised diners with its incredibly rich, multi-layered texture.
With its strategic Wanchai location and expanded culinary vision, Little Napoli is positioned to reassert itself as a crucial fixture on Hong Kong Island’s dynamic fine dining landscape, ensuring the enduring popularity of authentic Italian street food culture in the city. Food enthusiasts seeking a genuine taste of Naples are encouraged to visit the new venue to explore the revitalized menu and immersive atmosphere.
