Mid-Autumn Mooncake Tin Recycling Drive Returns With HK$20 Vouchers Per Tin at 10 Malls

Hong Kong residents can trade cleaned metal mooncake tins for Kee Wah Bakery discounts while supporting charity from September 21 to October 20, 2026.

HONG KONG — The glut of empty mooncake tins that accumulates after every Mid-Autumn Festival no longer needs to end up in landfills. Kee Wah Bakery has teamed up with Sino Group’s portfolio of shopping malls for the second consecutive year to launch a citywide mooncake tin recycling campaign, offering shoppers a HK$20 discount voucher for every clean metal tin returned — regardless of brand. The collected tins will be donated to the Christian Family Service Centre for charitable purposes, turning post-festival clutter into community goodwill.

Running from September 21 to October 20, 2026, the initiative accepts any brand of metal mooncake tin at ten designated mall concierge desks across Hong Kong. Paper boxes are not eligible. Each qualifying tin earns one Kee Wah Bakery discount coupon, with a cap of five vouchers per person — though S+ REWARDS members can double their haul to ten tins, except at YM² 裕民坊, where the member bonus does not apply.

Where to drop off your tins

The ten collection points are all operated by or affiliated with Sino Group:

  1. Tuen Mun Town Plaza
  2. Olympian City
  3. Citywalk
  4. China Hong Kong City
  5. Gold Coast Mall
  6. Tsim Sha Tsui Centre
  7. Island Resort Mall
  8. Regente Ville Shopping Arcade
  9. YM² 裕民坊
  10. Long One Plaza

A total of 22,000 vouchers are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so early participation is advised. The campaign’s low barrier to entry — simply rinse and dry the tin — is designed to maximize community participation, according to the organisers.

How to use the discount vouchers

The HK$20 coupons can be redeemed at any Kee Wah Bakery store in Hong Kong before December 31, 2026, with a minimum purchase of HK$100 at regular prices. Exclusions apply at Hong Kong International Airport and Sogo department store outlets. Only one voucher may be used per transaction, and they cannot be combined with mooncake gift cards, cash vouchers, or other promotional offers.

The initiative addresses a significant seasonal waste problem. According to environmental groups, millions of metal mooncake tins are discarded annually in Hong Kong, many of which are recyclable but end up in incinerators due to insufficient collection infrastructure. Programmes like this one help divert valuable aluminium and steel from the waste stream while giving consumers a tangible incentive to participate.

Beyond the environmental benefit, the partnership with Christian Family Service Centre adds a philanthropic layer, ensuring the recycled tins support social services for vulnerable communities in Hong Kong.

For residents still deciding what to do with their post-festival tins, the message from organisers is clear: wash them, bring them to a participating mall, and turn waste into savings. With the voucher cap allowing up to HK$200 in discounts for S+ REWARDS members, the programme rewards those who plan ahead.

As Hong Kong continues to grapple with its waste management challenges, campaigns like this demonstrate how retailers, property developers, and charities can collaborate to create circular economy solutions that benefit everyone. The next step for interested participants is simple: check your kitchen cabinets, clean those tins, and head to the nearest participating mall before October 20.
