Hong Kong’s Consumer Council exposes serious flaws in popular induction cookers, from fire hazards to misleading energy labels.
In a sweeping investigation that will make home cooks think twice before splurging on a premium model, the Consumer Council of Hong Kong has released a damning report on 13 dual-zone and full-surface induction hobs tested in its latest issue of Choice magazine (Issue 568). Priced between HK$3,680 and HK$18,580, these appliances from household names like German Pool, Panasonic, Whirlpool, Siemens, and Rasonic were put through rigorous safety and performance evaluations. The results are alarming: two models failed to heat oil to the required temperature after 45 minutes, nearly 70% could not meet international low-heat control standards, and one unit’s standby power consumption was so excessive it landed at the lowest energy efficiency rating—despite claiming to be second-tier.
The Fire Risk You Didn’t Know About
Induction hobs have become the darling of modern kitchens for good reason: they’re easier to clean than gas stoves, don’t pump heat into the room, and offer precise temperature control. But the Consumer Council’s findings suggest that not all models deliver on that promise. In a simulated cooking test where the main burner had to heat cooking oil to 180°C within 45 minutes, two units—the German Pool GIC-252DB and the Giggas GS-238D—could barely push past 170°C. Meanwhile, the Panasonic KY-C223B took nearly 40 minutes to reach target, leaving barely enough time to fry a single batch of frozen chips.
Of the 13 models tested, 10 managed the task in 13.7 to 25.3 minutes, successfully frying between one and three portions. But speed isn’t everything.
Uneven Heat: A Recipe for Disaster
Uniform heat distribution is critical for consistent cooking, yet five of the tested models produced pancakes with dark centers and pale edges—a clear sign of hot spots. The German Pool GIC-252DB went a step further: during the pancake test, its overheating protection kicked in, shutting the unit down automatically before the batter was fully cooked.
The three “full-surface” models—which allow cookware to be placed anywhere on the cooking zone—also struggled. In these units, heat concentrated at the front and rear, leaving the middle area noticeably cooler. The Consumer Council noted that the gap between two induction coils likely causes this unevenness, meaning a long pot won’t heat evenly across its entire base.
Simmering Trouble: Low Heat Control Fails
For dishes that require long, gentle simmering—think soups, stews, or melted chocolate—low-heat performance is paramount. The Council tested this by slowly heating oil to melt chocolate, applying the international IEC 60350-2 standard. The criteria are strict: oil temperature must not exceed 53°C within the first 18 minutes, must reach at least 40°C within 30 minutes, and must never surpass 75°C.
Only four models passed. The rest saw oil temperatures spike too quickly, rendering them unsuitable for delicate, low-heat cooking. Nearly 70% of the samples failed this key benchmark.
Energy Labels Under Fire
Beyond cooking performance, the Council uncovered troubling discrepancies in energy efficiency. Standby power consumption ranged from a mere 0.13 watts to a shocking 2.28 watts for the Rasonic RIC-S44E. Under Hong Kong’s mandatory energy labeling scheme, any dual-zone induction hob exceeding 2 watts standby consumption receives the lowest Grade 5 rating. Yet the Rasonic unit bore a Grade 2 sticker—a discrepancy the Council has flagged to the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) for investigation.
In total, five models showed a one-grade gap between their tested energy efficiency and their label claims. The three full-surface models could not be assessed under the standard testing protocol due to their unique power-boost modes.
Safety Tips Every User Should Know
The Consumer Council urges all induction hob owners to follow these four essential precautions:
- Use a dedicated power socket. Induction hobs draw high wattage; sharing a socket with other appliances can cause overheating or tripping.
- Read the manual. Choose cookware of the correct size and material—only ferromagnetic pots work efficiently.
- Inspect the glass surface before use. Any cracks or damage can lead to electrical hazards; stop using immediately and contact the supplier.
- Don’t unplug immediately after cooking. The internal cooling fan continues to run for several minutes to prevent heat damage to components. Waiting to disconnect extends the appliance’s lifespan.
What This Means for Hong Kong Consumers
The Consumer Council’s findings send a clear message: price is no guarantee of performance. A HK$4,280 model performed among the best, while some premium units faltered on basic safety and efficiency measures. For the home cook, the takeaway is simple—look beyond the brand name and sticker price. Check independent test results, pay attention to low-heat capabilities, and never assume that a higher price tag buys better quality.
The EMSD is now reviewing the test data, and further action—including potential label corrections or recalls—may follow. Until then, consumers are advised to choose wisely, cook safely, and stay informed.
