Researchers tested 12 popular reusable water bottles categorized by four mouthpiece designs and measured bacteria at the drinking surface, delivering startling results that challenge everyday hygiene assumptions.

The Dirtiest of Them All

Among the four bottle types tested, the slide-top design—a favourite for its one-handed operation and leak-resistant cap—ranked as the most contaminated. These bottles averaged a staggering 933,340 colony-forming units (CFU) per square centimetre at the area where lips make contact. However, even this “cleanest” option still holds over 12 times more bacteria than a toilet seat, underscoring that no reusable bottle is immune to contamination.

PET plastic bottles harbour significantly higher microbial loads than stainless steel bottles. The study also found that drinking directly from the rim—rather than using a cup or pouring—elevates contamination risk. Alarmingly, up to 90% of users refill their bottles without washing them first, allowing bacteria to form a resilient biofilm over time.
