The answer, he explains, is often a resounding no.
The Supplement Misconception
Most supplements do not belong in the fridge. Dr. Liu points out that vitamin tablets, mineral pills, and standard capsules are designed for storage at room temperature—typically around 25 degrees Celsius. The problem arises when these bottles are subjected to the constant temperature shifts that occur every time the refrigerator door opens and closes. This fluctuation causes condensation to form inside the container, and supplements are highly susceptible to moisture absorption. Once exposed to humidity, capsules begin to clump together, degrade rapidly, and can even develop mold.
The expert’s guidance is straightforward: keep most supplements in a cool, dry cupboard away from direct sunlight. However, two notable exceptions exist. Certain probiotic strains with packaging that explicitly states “refrigerate after opening” do require cold storage.
