Two Hong Kong food-rescue charities are inviting residents to donate unopened mooncakes and non-perishable food at more than 260 drop-off points from late August to mid-September 2026, as part of citywide drives to reduce holiday waste and support grassroots families. Food Grace and St. James’ Settlement’s FOOD-CO will each run collection campaigns, redistributing surplus festive items to low-income households and elderly residents across the territory.
Food Grace Launches 240-Plus Collection Network
Food Grace’s “Nutritious Mid-Autumn 2026” campaign runs from August 26 to September 21, 2026, with over 240 public collection stations hosted by more than 250 corporations, community groups, and property management firms. The charity reports it has already channeled 263,000 mooncakes to families in need, while 240 organizations have signed its “Mid-Autumn Food Saving Charter,” pledging to curb festive food waste.
Drop-off sites span all 18 districts, including shopping malls in Sha Tin, Tsuen Wan, and Kwun Tong; office towers in Central and Kowloon Bay; and commercial centers in the New Territories and outlying islands. Notable venues include New Town Plaza, Tsuen Wan Plaza, APM, V City, and the Hong Kong Science Park.
FOOD-CO Sets Up 24 Neighborhood Stations
St. James’ Settlement’s FOOD-CO platform is hosting its “Mid-Autumn Food Collection Drive 2026” through September 14, with 24 designated points. These include the charity’s direct service centers in Wan Chai and Kwai Chung, plus 12 locations in the New Territories, 8 in Kowloon, and 2 on Hong Kong Island. Collection sites feature neighborhood malls such as T Town, Lok Fu Plaza, Wong Tai Sin Center, and Yiu Tung Shopping Centre.
Donation Guidelines: What to Give
To ensure recipients receive safe, quality items, both organizations enforce specific requirements:
- Mooncakes: sealed in original, undamaged packaging
- Mooncake vouchers: must be valid for redemption on or after September 14, 2026
- Non-perishable staples: rice, noodles, canned food, biscuits, cereal, and small gift boxes
- Shelf life: all items must have at least eight weeks remaining before expiration
- Labels: packaging must clearly show contents and expiry dates
Not accepted: perishable items such as ice-skin mooncakes and fresh fruit, plus any food in glass or breakable containers.
