Wanpo Tea’s Boba Milk Tea Tops 752-Calorie Chart, Nutritionist Warns

A new calorie ranking from a Hong Kong nutritionist has exposed a hidden cost to the city’s favourite bubble tea fix: Wanpo Tea’s signature Boba Milk Tea packs 752 kilocalories per large cup, roughly the energy equivalent of three bowls of white rice.

Wanpo Tea’s Hong Kong Presence

Wanpo Tea has become a fixture of Hong Kong’s bubble tea scene since arriving from Taiwan. The chain operates 13 branches across the territory, including busy storefronts in Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong and Mong Kok. Daily queues are routine, with customers lining up for signature creations such as Brown Sugar Pearl Crème Brûlée Milk, Strawberry Cheese Milk and Jin Xuan Pearl Noodle.

The popularity is undeniable, but the numbers are sobering. Nutritionist Sharon, known on Instagram as @nutrition.sharon, analysed 12 of the chain’s most-ordered drinks and ranked them by calorie content. All figures are based on a 700-millilitre large serving with full sugar and regular ice.

The 12-Drink Calorie Ranking

The Boba Milk Tea takes the top spot at 752 kcal with 59 grams of sugar. The Brown Sugar Pearl Crème Brûlée Milk follows at 620 kcal, with the Winter Melon Drink with Pearls in third at 551 kcal. The full ranking:

  • 1. Boba Milk Tea — 752 kcal (59g sugar)
  • 2. Brown Sugar Pearl Crème Brûlée Milk — 620 kcal (58g sugar)
  • 3. Winter Melon Drink with Pearls — 551 kcal (72g sugar)
  • 4. Jin Xuan Pearl Noodle — 541 kcal (88g sugar)
  • 5. Taro Milk with Boba — 521 kcal (58g sugar)
  • 6. Strawberry Cheese Milk — 520 kcal (90g sugar)
  • 7. Apple Island — 497 kcal (117g sugar)
  • 8. Gold Medal Aiyu Lemon — 473 kcal (92g sugar)

  • 10. Big Green Plum Green Tea — 356 kcal (78g sugar)

Nutritionist-Approved Low-Calorie Swaps

The good news? Small tweaks can make a dramatic difference. Sharon’s top advice is to order with light sweetness. The Gold Medal Aiyu Lemon, for example, drops from 473 kcal at full sugar to just 141 kcal when lightly sweetened — a 90% reduction in sugar.

Other favourites respond similarly. The Apple Island, White Pomelo Liya and Big Green Plum Green Tea each fall to roughly 70 to 100 kcal per cup when ordered lightly sweetened. For those who need texture, low-calorie toppings such as aiyu jelly, starch jelly and grass jelly add interest without the caloric burden of syrupy pearls.

Why the Numbers Matter

The World Health Organization recommends capping daily added sugar intake at 25 to 50 grams. A single full-sugar Wanpo drink can exceed that allowance entirely; the Apple Island alone contains 117 grams. This is not about shaming bubble tea lovers — it is about making informed choices. As Sharon’s breakdown demonstrates, you can still enjoy your favourite drink without abandoning your health goals. Ask for light sweetness, choose your toppings wisely and keep portions in check.
