Wong Chuk Hang’s New The Southside Mall: A Food Lover’s Paradise Emerges

The long-awaited The Southside mall has officially opened at Wong Chuk Hang MTR station, transforming the neighborhood’s dining scene with nearly 40 restaurants spread across five floors. Long considered a culinary desert, this new destination now offers residents and visitors an array of Michelin-recognized ramen, Bib Gourmand Vietnamese fare, and pet-friendly cafes, all under one roof.

Developed as a 130-store retail hub, The Southside aims to serve the growing community in Hong Kong’s southern district. With direct access from the MTR’s B exit and a 24-hour pedestrian walkway linked to transit hubs, the mall is designed for convenience. While retail occupies most of the space, the food and beverage lineup has quickly become the main attraction.

Among the most notable tenants is Brass Spoon, a Vietnamese restaurant that has held a Michelin Bib Gourmand for eight consecutive years. Its signature phở features broth simmered for at least 12 hours using 50 kilograms of beef bones daily, with choices of premium cuts like American Angus short rib or brisket. For ramen enthusiasts, Konjiki Hototogisu brings its Tokyo-born, Michelin-starred clam-based shoyu ramen to the LG floor. The soup, made from 30 kilograms of clams combined with pork and fish stocks, delivers a savory-sweet depth that earned the shop five consecutive stars.

Western options include Chef’s Cuts, now in its fourth location, specializing in dry-aged steaks and seafood platters. Their sharing platter—featuring Boston lobster, oysters, Hokkaido scallops, and mussels—is designed for groups. The restaurant also offers grass-fed Black Angus ribeye, grilled bone marrow, and squid ink pasta with scallops and sea urchin sauce.

Thai cuisine lovers can head to Bamboo Thai, which combines modern dishes with custom murals by a Japanese artist, creating a resort-like vibe. Signature items include volcano pork ribs, jumbo prawns with Thai egg curry, and mango sticky rice. To celebrate its opening, the restaurant offers weekday dinner promotions, including a free coconut for guests ordering select seafood dishes.

Taiwanese chain Duan Chun Zhen brings its famous braised beef noodle soup to the second floor. The broth uses fresh beef fat, 23 types of Chinese herbs, and a slow-cooking process lasting up to nine hours. Guests can choose between thick or thin noodles, paired with tender beef shank or brisket. Small plates like scallion shrimp cakes and soy-marinated egg platters round out the menu.

Korean barbecue fans will appreciate Gul Dong Sik Dang, known for its half-arm-length beef ribs and sustainably sourced pork from Korea’s Gyeongju region. The cave-like interior, with stone walls and warm lighting, adds to the immersive experience.

For lighter fare, Nana’s Green Tea, a Tokyo import, offers matcha and hojicha beverages and desserts, including a limited-edition yuzu warabi mocha parfait available through August. NOC Coffee Co. , a Hong Kong brand recognized as one of the world’s 50 best coffee shops by Big7 Travel in 2019, debuts its first store selling ice cream at this location. Other cafes like Stain+ and Meet Met Met provide relaxed settings for brunch or a coffee break.

Ombra serves authentic Italian food, with a HKD 148 lunch set that includes appetizers, pasta, mains, and dessert—featuring beef cheeks pappardelle, Sicilian red shrimp spaghetti, and tiramisu. Meanwhile, MUSEe blends Southeast Asian flavors with Western touches, offering happy hour cocktail deals from 2 pm to 9:30 pm, making it ideal for after-work gatherings.

Chinese fine dining at Wang Zi Restaurant emphasizes fresh ingredients and no artificial additives, with its signature roasted goose prepared in small batches throughout the day to ensure quality.

The opening of The Southside signals a new chapter for Wong Chuk Hang, one where convenience meets quality dining. With more residents and workers expected in the area, the mall is poised to become a staple for food lovers across the region. Future phases may introduce additional concepts, but for now, the variety on offer marks a significant upgrade for this once-overlooked neighborhood.
